Gole Alcantara Parco

Gole Alcantara Parco

District / neighborhood: Kemstra biased

The Gole Alcantara Parco is an original Sicilian native to the place. It flows along the island in different areas and in front of changing landscapes. As part of this meandering journey of the Alcantara River, he meets another Sicilian – the volcano Athena. Or, more precisely, in the lava streams that spewed from it.

This meeting between the cold water of the river, which comes from the frozen peak of Mount Nabrodi. The boiling lava created quite a few remarkable phenomena, which can be seen in Alcantara Canyon Park.

The main attraction in the place is the mall – in the sense of a valley with steep and high walls, not a place for shopping – created as a result of the meeting between the hot current and the cold current. It is an impressive and extraordinary sight that proves that nature is the best architect and designer.

Thanks to the river water, spectacular basalt pools with waterfalls were created in the canyons where you can swim or go body rafting if you feel like an adventure. Body rafting is just like regular rafting. Instead of navigating the currents with a kayak, you do it with your body. A delightful experience. If you come with a baby, note that body rafting is also suitable for babies – definitely an unconventional activity for parents and children.

Apart from the canyon, pools, and waterfalls, this meeting between the river and the volcano has become highly fertile ground. The reserve has a botanical and zoological garden with a tremendous wealth of flora and fauna. There are 50 different species of animals and hundreds of types of plants, all thanks to the river water and the lava that made the soil particularly fertile.

But this is only the beginning of what can be done in the Gole Alcantara Parco. Among other things, visitors are offered motorized tours around the park so as not to miss any important detail or beautiful spot. These tours are divided between a regular and relaxed bus ride for those who want a light experience or a jeep tour for those looking for more action.

When the weather permits, there are hiking trails for those who want to take a short trek through the extraordinary landscapes. Some of the routes also include a section of walking in the cold river water. Those who like to pedal can rent a bike and ride along the park’s many points of interest.

The price of the visit varies depending on the type of trip you decide to do. The introductory price is €10, and it goes up from there: body rafting will cost €40 per person. A jeep trip can also reach 90 euros. As in any site in nature, it is worth arriving when the weather is favorable, and visibility is good.

Please note that some attractions are not active during the winter.
