The traditional Italian restaurant in the Cannaregio district of Venice has a long name. But the truth is that it didn’t happen in one day. Ca d’Or Ella Vodoba began its journey simply as Ca d’Oco, after the street where it is located. But when the owner passed away, his wife continued to manage the business with a high hand and by then it had already earned the nickname Ella Voodoo. That is, the widow. Today their two children run the business. But they are not the first to take over the restaurant, it has been passed down from generation to generation since the 19th century.
This is a warm and pleasant Venetian restaurant – even a bit crowded, with a retro but very comforting design. You can sit down to eat or stand at the standing bar, and have a drink and a snack. The owners are almost always there and talking to the customers. A family business in every sense of the word. The prices are very affordable compared to the city.
The food, of course, is traditional Venetian, but with a place of honor for seafood and fish.
First of all, warm up with some appetizers. The selection includes, for example, cod fish with polenta, spaghetti a la bursa, and a highly recommended seafood plate. For main dishes, there is spaghetti in squid ink, pasta with anchovies and onions, and more. Judging by the reviews, it’s worth trying the Tunisian liver dish and the meatballs.
If you are not satisfied with the starters and mains, then you will probably have to order another dish – because desserts and coffee are not served here. At Ca d’Oco Ella and Vodova emphasized the food and the wine. dessert? Do not mix joy with joy.
And one more thing that is important to note: there are also options for vegetarians.
The restaurant’s opening hours: on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, the place is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dinner is served between 18:30 and 22:30. On Sundays the restaurant is open only the evening and on Thursdays – closed. At noon you can still come spontaneously and get a table. If you feel like having dinner there – you will have to plan and make a reservation.
