The market square Delle Erbe Piazza – Verona
Verona is one of the oldest cities in Italy and as such it offers plenty of tourist attractions, historical sites and interesting activities that will allow you to learn about Italian history in a fascinating way. In addition to these, it has markets, boutique shops, urban parks and excellent restaurants that will make your vacation unforgettable.
Among the most central attractions in Verona you will find the market square which stars in the list of must-see places if this is your first visit to the city, but not only – it is actually one of the most important tourist centers in the city and as such the old square attracts crowds of visitors every day.
The market square of Verona is in the heart of the old city, the entire area which has been officially recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO, which indicates its historical importance not only for Verona and Italy and rightly so – in its heyday this square was the most central place in the city, similar to the Forum Roman, and depending on where the residents gathered, important speeches were made, trade took place, and several important historical buildings were built in and near it:
- Lamberti Tower – is an impressive tower that rises to a height of about 85 meters above the ground and as such is considered the tallest tower in Verona. Connoisseurs will notice different architectural styles that indicate changes that have been made to it throughout history and it is located in a large clock face that you can climb and enjoy a spectacular view of the city.
- Mapi Palace – a historic palace from the 15th century AD under which are the remains of ancient Roman buildings. If you visit the place, it is recommended to at least be impressed by the special building from the outside.
- An ancient fountain from the 14th century AD which was built by Cansenio della Scala. What is special about this fountain is the statue of Madonna Verona standing on it which dates back to the 4th century AD.
In addition to these, you will find in the area an abundance of cafes and restaurants (which makes the place a wonderful destination to stop for a light lunch break), charming galleries where local artists present spectacular works and special boutique shops.
